U.S.A. Hospital Department Field Operating Set by Tiencken

JULIUS TIENCKEN (1825 -1889 )

According to Edmonson, Julius Tiencken was active from 1863  –  1872.  However, I have uncovered evidence that he was in business earlier than this.  As shown below, in the July – December 1860 edition of the “American Medical Monthly and New York Review” there is a surgical report by Dr.  John O. Bronson, dated 6th June, 1856, regarding repair of a vesico-vaginal perforation.  The tool illustrated in the article “is made by Tiencken, 749 Broadway, Luer’s well-known depot.”

Furthermore, in the 1859 New York City Directory, he is listed at the address of 749 Broadway under the category of “Surgical and Dental Instrument Makers”.

In the tax assessment records for 1862 – 1865, he appears at various addresses:

Sept. 1862:  4 Astor Place – “retail dealer”
April – Nov.  1862:  172 Forsythe  – “steel manufacturer”
Feb. – Sept.   1864:  140 Attorney – “surgical instrument (steel)”
March – May  1865:  140 Attorney – “retail dealer” and “manufacturer”

By 1878 he moved to San Francisco where he worked as the retail dealer for “J. H.A. Folkers & Bro.” who sold “surgical and dental instruments” and were “agent for George Tiemann and Co.” He is listed in this capacity until 1887.

Tiencken died on April 18, 1889 and is buried (as “Julius Tienken) in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Colma, San Mateo county, California.
