Original U.S. Army Squibb panniers are very rare. To find one with even some of the original contents, both wooden insert trays, and a relatively intact content label on the inside lid is even rarer.
This was purchased years ago in Georgia; but further provenance is unknown. It is by no means complete, but does have several of the original Japanned tins, two of which still have the hand-painted numbers corresponding to their position in the pannier. There are other period medical and apothecary items present as well including a bone-handled toothbrush, a boxed apothecary scale with weights, and two bottles marked “U.S. Hospital Dept.”. There are some post-war items such as a stoneware mortar and pestle and a c.1890’s dental alloy bottle. Only a few of the items are original to the set, the others were added in at some point in time.
