This autopsy hammer was made during the period from 1831 – 1837, as reflected by the “W R” marking (for King William IV). Used along with a chisel and assorted other saws and knives, this would be used to conduct a post-mortem examination. It is in excellent condition. It reflects the fine craftsmanship that John Weiss was famous for: the balance and weight of the hammer is superb, and a solid steel shaft runs the entire length of the instrument. It is as solid today as was when it was first manufactured.
