DATED 1777 BONE TONGUE DEPRESSOR (OR SPATULA) USED BY DR. JOHN W. RIDLEY, POSSIBLY A BRITISH SURGEON

Most likely hand carved from cow bone, this tongue spatula was used by Dr. John W. Ridley. The first name is carved as “In.” which stands for Ioannes, the latinized form of the name John. He later added a small “W.” for the middle initial. While I cannot be certain whether this is the same person, I did find a John Ridley listed as an Assistant-Surgeon as of November 29, 1813 in the (British) “Medical Establishment for the Military Department of Ordnance.”
